Understanding Your Blood Pressure Numbers
A blood pressure reading has two numbers: systolic (the pressure when your heart beats) over diastolic (the pressure when your heart rests between beats). A normal reading is generally below 120/80 mmHg.
Readings consistently at or above 130/80 mmHg are considered high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Because it rarely causes symptoms, it's often called a 'silent' condition, which is why regular screening matters.
Lifestyle changes such as reducing sodium intake, staying physically active, limiting alcohol, and managing stress can meaningfully lower blood pressure. Medication may also be recommended depending on your overall cardiovascular risk.
If your home readings are consistently elevated, or if you experience symptoms like severe headache, chest pain, or shortness of breath, contact your care team promptly.
